Men's Health Awareness Day
9:00 AM
McGill University Health Centre - Glen site
In the time it takes most people to check their email, men can have their prostate checked – an examination that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer, which can be lifesaving if caught early enough. In short, a 10-second checkup could save a life. This is one of the messages MUHC urologist Dr. Peter Chan is trying to get across to men in order to encourage attendance at the 12th annual Men’s Health Awareness Day, which will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the Glen site of the MUHC between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Services available at Men’s Health Awareness day include a health questionnaire, blood pressure and cholesterol checks, a prostate exam for some men and the option of making an appointment for a fertility exam. All male employees are welcome to participate! Register in advance here, or stop by in the morning to get your registration form and fill it out before returning for your exam during your lunch hour or your break.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men – about 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 28 will die from it. But the survival rate of survival is at nearly 100% if caught early enough, which is why the prostate exam is so important.
Since launching the event in 2006, Dr. Chan and his team have examined over 2,000 men, 1 in 5 of whom have been contacted for follow-up consultations at the MUHC.
