This presentation will review challenges that complicate cross cultural mental health work. Whereas some individuals and their families view emotional problems from a cultural or religious perspective, others may deny that they exist altogether. Furthermore, psychiatry and psychology are heavily stigmatized by some traditions and communities. Others may have long experience of social suffering in the form of racism and discrimination and, as a result, mistrust mental health services. The Cultural Consultation Service (CCS) of the Jewish General Hospital offers culturally-informed psychiatric evaluation to resolve misunderstandings and foster hope. The CCS collaborates with linguistic and cultural interpreters to provide person-centered assessment and treatment planning. The CCS works with families to build rapport and establish norms of behaviour and acceptable forms of intervention. The CCS advocates for refugees who are struggling to have their voices heard. Taken together, these priorities bridge the gap between mainstream mental health services and the diversity that makes up modern Canadian cities like Montreal.
